Animated cinematography is an art type unique to animated film and movies. Although the revealing of pictures on light-sensitive elements goes back to the early 1800s, movies required a new way of digital cameras and new visual methods.

In the childhood timefram of the movie industry, the cinematographer was usually also the movie director and the person actually managing or operating the photographic camera. As the art's style and technology progressed, a larger separation between movie director and photographic camera owner (camera man) surfaced. With the introduction of synthetic illumination and quicker (more lighting sensitive) movie shares, in addition to technical enhancements in optics and new methods such as color movie and wide screen, the technical factors of cinematography required a professional in that area.

Cinematography was key during the quiet movie era - no sound apart from music, no conversation - the movies relied on illumination, performing and set.

In 1919, in Artist, the new movie capital of the world, one of the first (and still existing) business cultures was formed: the American Community of Cinematographers (ASC), which was standing to identify the cinematographer's participation to the art and science of movie making. Similar business organizations have been established in other nations, too
