The industry uses the clapperboard to guide the syncing of picture and audio, and to assign and tag specific scenes and different takes taped throughout a production. The distinct "clapping" sound that the clapperboard creates can be recognized very easily on an sound track, and the closing of the clap stick can be acknowledged easily on the separate photo reel. The two tracks can then be accurately synced up by coordinating the audio and motion. Alternative labels for the clapperboard include things like the clapper, clapboard, the slate or slate board; sync slate, time slate, sticks, the board, and the marker.
